Stern Pinball: The Industry Leader

Stern Banner Image

Stern Pinball is a leading name in the pinball industry, renowned for its innovative designs and high-quality machines.

Founded by Gary Stern, the company has a long-standing reputation for combining classic pinball gameplay with modern technology.

They are famous for their unique themes and collaborations with iconic franchises, delivering immersive experiences to fans and collectors alike.

Their commitment to craftsmanship and detail ensures that every machine is not just a game, but a work of art, making Stern a beloved brand among pinball enthusiasts worldwide.

An All-New King Kong Story, Built for Pinball

King Kong: Myth of Terror Island is not a film adaptation. Stern and game designer Keith Elwin went back to the original 1932 story and built an entirely new interpretation created specifically for pinball.

Players join Ann Darrow, Jack Driscoll, and Karl Denham on their journey to the mysterious Terror Island, facing giant spiders, dinosaurs, and Kong himself before the great ape makes his catastrophic return to New York City.

That creative foundation shows at every step of the design. The shots, the modes, the toys, and the rules all serve the story rather than retrofitting it around an existing layout. This is the rare pinball machine where the theme and the game feel genuinely inseparable.

Designed by Keith Elwin, Illustrated by Pinball Legends

Keith Elwin is the designer behind JAWS, Godzilla, and Jurassic Park. King Kong is his next title in that sequence of blockbuster Stern machines, bringing the same layered rule depth and purposeful shot design that those games are celebrated for.

The original hand-drawn artwork was created by three of the most respected names in pinball illustration: Kevin O'Connor, Greg Freres, and Jeremy Packer, also known as Zombie Yeti. The Pro ships with the exclusive King Kong Terror Island translite and Terror Island side cabinet artwork drawn by this team.

The original orchestrated soundtrack was composed by Jerry Thompson, a pinball hall of fame composer whose scores have defined the atmosphere of some of the most beloved machines ever made. Custom speech was recorded by Brian "Q" Quinn of Impractical Jokers fame, alongside Rick Zieff, Peter Mackenzie, and Scott Mosenson.

Four Flippers: An Unusual and Important Layout

The King Kong Pro is built around a four-flipper layout, which places two standard lower flippers and two upper flippers on the playfield. Four-flipper designs are uncommon and give the game a distinct feel from the moment you lift a flipper button.

The upper flippers open up shot angles that a two-flipper machine simply cannot reach, particularly for the stainless steel Cliffs ramp that carries the ball across the playfield to the upper right flipper and for the Log Bridge inlane diverter that feeds the upper left flipper.

That additional layer of control means the game rewards players who learn the layout. Shots that look impossible from the lower flippers become clean when you know how to route the ball upstairs first.

The Custom Sculpted King Kong Figure and Gong Entrance

The Pro features a custom-sculpted static King Kong figure that anchors the playfield and gives the game its visual centrepiece. Kong looms over the action exactly as he should, a physical presence that no amount of screen animation can replicate.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Pro Pinball Machine playfield overview showing sculpted Kong figure, ramps, targets, and illuminated playfield elements

Shoot the Gong entrance, housed in a decorated plastic assembly, to summon Kong and feed the ball into Kong's vertical up kicker and wireform return. The Gong shot also triggers Island Scenes mode, one of the core game modes tied to the journey narrative.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Pro pinball machine Gong entrance housed in a decorated temple with a pinball resting against the Gong

The Premium and LE models upgrade Kong to a fully animatronic figure that physically swings his arms and torso, and replace the Gong with a sculpted kinetic bash toy set in a sculpted temple with a secret entrance. The Pro's Kong does not move. What you get is the identical shot, the identical mode structure, and the identical rule set at a significantly lower price.

The Giant Spider Pit with Playfield Magnet

The Pit is one of the most tactile features on the entire playfield. A custom-sculpted giant spider guards the entrance, and shooting into The Pit activates a playfield magnet that grabs the ball, holds it, and physically attacks it before releasing it unpredictably.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Pro pinball machine custom sculpted Giant Spider mounted above The Pit magnet area of the playfield

That magnet behaviour is not cosmetic. The ball genuinely behaves differently inside The Pit than anywhere else on the playfield, creating moments of tension and surprise that players cannot entirely anticipate or control.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Pro pinball machine The Pit magnet holding a pinball beside the Giant Spider area of the playfield

The Spider Pit game mode sends players back to battle various pit creatures in sequence. Every trip into The Pit carries real stakes because the magnet can send the ball in directions that demand fast flipper reactions to recover.

The Biplane Helix Ramp and Stainless Steel Cliffs Ramp

The helix-shaped Biplane ramp is one of the signature physical structures of this playfield. The ball spirals through the helix on its way across the field, and the Pro includes a Biplane multilayered decorated plastic aimed directly at the Kong figure. The Premium and LE versions swap this for a custom sculpted Biplane toy, but the ramp geometry and the shot itself are identical.

The stainless steel Cliffs ramp runs the ball from the lower playfield all the way across to the upper right flipper. Stainless steel ramps are a mark of build quality over plastic alternatives, and this one is a long, satisfying shot that pays off by opening up the upper flipper game.

Together these two ramps give the playfield a sense of vertical geography that reinforces the Terror Island setting. The game constantly rewards players who can string ramp shots together with the upper flipper returns.

Lost Temple Drop Targets and Kong's Punch-Back Kicker

The Lost Temple features a four-bank of sweepable drop targets with a hidden Island Treasure standup target behind them. Clearing the bank lights Kong lock, and locking three balls starts King Kong Multiball, the title mode of the game.

Kong's punch-back kicking target physically launches balls back at the player. Hit it and the ball comes straight back fast, either demanding an immediate save or dropping into the secret entrance to Kong's vertical up kicker if you miss.

The playfield also includes two optical spinning targets, a Power-Up standup target, four playfield multiplier standup targets, and the Kong Cave scoop with its own vertical up kicker and wireform return. The shot variety across the full layout is substantial.

Six Game Modes with Full Rule Depth

Stern King Kong Pro Playfield Full Overview

King Kong: Myth of Terror Island is built around six distinct game modes, each tied directly to a moment in the story. These are not decorative: they require specific shots and reward deliberate strategy.

The Climb Feature sends players shooting CLIMB arrows to ascend the building and collect awards. King Kong Multiball locks three balls via the Lost Temple drop targets and unleashes the title mode. The Biplane Attack Feature starts by shooting the Biplane ramp. T-Rex Battle activates when players collect KING KONG letters. Island Scenes launch from the Gong shot. The Spider Pit sends players into The Pit to battle pit creatures in sequence.

The full rule set is identical across Pro, Premium, and LE. A Pro owner plays the same game as an LE owner. The differences between editions are in physical toys and cosmetic upgrades, not in the rules or the modes.

Stern Insider Connected Platform

Every King Kong Pro ships with Stern's Insider Connected platform built in, accessed via the QR reader mounted on the bottom arch. Players scan in to track progress, earn game-specific achievements, and follow an ongoing treasure hunt through Terror Island.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Pro pinball machine bottom arch with the Insider Connected QR reader and apron instruction cards

The platform also delivers ongoing code updates from Stern after purchase. New rules, new features, and refinements to existing modes all arrive as updates, which means the game continues to develop over time rather than shipping as a fixed product.

For operators, Insider Connected gives players a reason to return to the same machine repeatedly to complete their achievement lists and advance their Terror Island treasure hunt. That repeat-play incentive is built directly into every game session.

Commercial Build Quality and Coin-Op Ready

The King Kong Pro ships configured for either coin-op or free play, making it a direct fit for arcades, barcades, bars, and home game rooms without any additional modification. The coin door and free-play settings are accessible from the operator menu.

Stern's commercial-grade build standard means the machine is engineered for high-traffic environments. Every King Kong Pro is backed by a one-year warranty and is built on the proven SPIKE 2 electronics platform. The cabinet ships in powder-coated black wrinkle finish side armor with matching hinges, front lockdown molding, and legs.

The Pro cabinet is also compatible with the Speaker Expression Lighting System accessory kit, sold separately, for operators or home buyers who want to add dynamic lighting effects as an upgrade after purchase.

Assembly

Assembling the King Kong: Myth of Terror Island Pro is a straightforward process that typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes with two people.

The machine ships with the playfield, electronics, and backbox fully installed and tested at the factory. The backbox is folded down and strapped for transit. On arrival, the main tasks are attaching the four legs using the leg bolts already fitted to the cabinet, raising and securing the backbox using the two backbox bolts found in the cash box, and levelling the machine using the leg levelers.

You will need a 5/8 inch socket wrench to mount the legs and a utility knife and snips to open the carton. None of these tools ship with the machine, so have them ready before you begin. Stern states that at least two people are required to move and position the game safely, given its 210 lb weight.
