The Stern Metallica Remastered Premium! Where a decade of legend meets a ground-up modern rebuild. This is not a new title with Metallica branding slapped on it. It is the original John Borg masterpiece, redesigned from the electronics up, with every weak point addressed and every strength amplified.
Crafted for the Metallica fan who already loves the 2013 game and for the pinball player who demands the full picture, this machine delivers a playing experience that is richer, louder and more technically precise than anything the original could offer. It ships configurable for free play or coin-op, making it equally at home in a private game room, a barcade or a high-traffic entertainment venue.
Stern Pinball: The Industry Leader
Stern Pinball is a leading name in the pinball industry, renowned for its innovative designs and high-quality machines.
Founded by Gary Stern, the company has a long-standing reputation for combining classic pinball gameplay with modern technology.
They are famous for their unique themes and collaborations with iconic franchises, delivering immersive experiences to fans and collectors alike.
Their commitment to craftsmanship and detail ensures that every machine is not just a game, but a work of art, making Stern a beloved brand among pinball enthusiasts worldwide.
The Remaster: What Is Actually New
The original 2013 Metallica was one of Stern's best-selling machines ever. The remaster does not replace what made it great. It replaces everything that time and technology had left behind.
The display is now a full-color LCD running at 1366 x 768 resolution, driven by Stern's SPIKE 2 electronics platform. All video content has been rebuilt from scratch, and the game now incorporates HD-quality live Metallica concert footage selected by the band themselves. Every animation is new.
The audio is equally transformed. Over 1,000 new speech calls have been recorded specifically for this machine, including custom callouts by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo. Hearing the actual band call out your shots changes the emotional register of every game in a way that no stock sound package can replicate.
Song Selection: Over 20 Tracks, Your Choice, Every Game
At the start of every game, players select their song from more than 20 iconic Metallica tracks. The game's rules, animations and callouts then respond to that track throughout play.
Eight songs have been added beyond the original game's lineup, each with new supporting animations and live concert footage. The 22-song library covers the band's full catalog, from Kill 'Em All through the Grammy-winning 72 Seasons.
Additional tracks unlock through Stern's Insider Connected platform, meaning the song library can grow after purchase as Stern releases ongoing code updates. The machine you receive on day one is not the ceiling.
Four Multiballs and Two New Game Modes
The rule set, originally written by pinball software legend Lyman F. Sheats Jr., has been carefully extended rather than replaced. The four core multiballs remain: Electric Chair, Grave Marker, Snake and Coffin, each tied directly to a physical playfield toy.
Two entirely new game modes have been built for this remaster. "Hardwired," based on Metallica's 2016 album, and "72 Seasons," based on last year's Grammy-winning release, add depth that the original never had. A new "Blackened" Wizard Mode Multiball sits at the top of the rule stack for players who go deep.
The classic "Crank It Up" modes and the "End of the Line" Wizard Mode return as Challenge Modes, accessible through Insider Connected. Players who do not use Insider Connected lose nothing from the core game. Those who do get a second layer of competitive content built on top of it.
Sparky's Electric Chair: The Centerpiece Toy

The "Ride the Lightning" Electric Chair houses an all-new custom sculpted, articulated Sparky figure. A ball magnet in the chair catches the ball mid-flight and throws it back into play.
When Sparky is electrocuted, Ultra Violet illumination fires across his frame, revealing hidden graphics on his skeletal system and face. The effect is invisible under normal lighting and only appears at that moment, which makes it a genuine surprise even on repeat plays.

The original Sparky was one of the most memorable toys in Stern's catalog. The remastered version adds articulation and UV detail that the 2013 hardware could not support.
The Gavel, the Coffin Lock and Underground Subway
The "And Justice For All" Gavel is an all-new custom sculpted motorized mechanism. A disappearing magnetic ball holder captures the ball while the Gavel swings down and smashes it, sending it through an underground Coffin subway 3-ball lock.

The Coffin lock is visible through a clear window insert in the playfield surface, illuminated by Ultra Violet lighting below. Watching three balls stack in a glass-floored underground chamber before multiball releases is one of the most visually distinctive moments in modern pinball.
The Grave Marker, the Snake and the Captive Ball
The "Master of Puppets" Grave Marker is a motorized illuminated marker that rises from the playfield. Three inline drop targets guard it, and its own ball magnet interacts with play.
The ball-eating Snake features an animated jaw that opens and closes, with a ball eject mechanism that fires the ball back unpredictably. A captive ball target block rounds out the physical toy suite.

Together these four major toys, Sparky, the Gavel, the Grave Marker and the Snake, give every one of the four multiballs a physical anchor on the playfield. Every mode you are chasing has something you can see and aim at.
RGB Skulls, Illuminated Ramps and UV Band Members
The slingshot Skulls are individually RGB illuminated and change color to indicate your current Mystery level. Tracking your progress in a multiball-heavy game is far easier when the playfield itself is telling you where you stand.

The left and right ramps are stainless steel with custom engraved and illuminated "M" logos. Left and right orbits feature optical spinning targets, and a steel orbit upost directs balls into three RGB-lit pop bumpers. UV lighting also illuminates the Metallica band members depicted on the playfield surface during gameplay.

The Metallica logo back panel has individually controlled letters, and the new RGB-illuminated sculpted Skulls replace the original slingshot caps. The illuminated insert array has also been expanded to support the two new game modes without altering the original layout for the classic rules.
Rhys Cooper Artwork and Premium Cabinet Finish
All cabinet art on the Premium is hand-drawn by Rhys Cooper, the artist behind Metallica's most recognizable visual work across albums, tours and merchandise. The full-color Remastered translite and high-definition vinyl side cabinet decals are printed from Cooper's original illustrations.
The cabinet hardware carries a powder-coated black wrinkle finish across the hand guard side armor, hinges, front lockdown molding, legs and steel bottom arch. A multifunction Action Button sits on the lockdown bar, and the front molding uses Stern's Snap-Latch system for tool-free access.
The Premium cabinet is fully compatible with the Expression Lighting System and the Speaker Expression Lighting System, both sold separately as accessory kits. These add the synchronized light shows that are standard on the Limited Edition, making the Premium an upgradeable platform rather than a fixed configuration.
Insider Connected and Coin-Op Configuration
Stern's Insider Connected platform connects this machine to a global network of players. A QR reader is built into the bottom arch for instant player registration without a separate device.

Through Insider Connected, players track progress, earn game-specific Achievements and unlock Challenge Modes that are not accessible in standard play. Stern also delivers ongoing code updates through the platform, extending and refining the game after purchase at no additional cost.
The machine ships configurable for coin-op or free play, with standard coin door hardware in place. For operators in arcades, barcades or bars, the combination of a globally recognized band, four distinct multiballs and a rule set with genuine depth means high replay traffic and long sessions at the machine.
Sound: 3-Channel Amplifier with Graphic EQ
The audio system runs through a 3-channel amplifier with a 10-band graphic equalizer. A CPU-mounted line-out connector allows the machine to feed an external sound system for venues that want full-room audio from the game.

With over 1,000 new speech calls recorded by the four members of Metallica and HD-quality live concert audio integrated into the song library, the amplifier is not a bottleneck. Under bar lights and background noise, a machine that can drive external amplification is a meaningful operational advantage.

Assembly
Assembling the Metallica Remastered Premium is a straightforward process that typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes with two people. Stern explicitly requires at least two people to move and maneuver the machine safely.
The machine ships with the playfield, electronics and backbox already installed and tested at the factory. The backbox arrives folded down and strapped for transit. Setup involves raising and securing the backbox, removing the 8 leg bolts already fitted to the cabinet, attaching and leveling the four legs, and retrieving the pinballs, backbox bolts and keys from inside the cash box behind the coin door.
No tools ship with the machine. You will need a 5/8 inch socket wrench to mount the legs, a utility knife to open the carton, and snips to remove the strapping.
