The Stern King Kong: Myth of Terror Island Premium. Where mechanical spectacle meets precision-engineered pinball design. This is the edition that brings Kong to life with a fully animatronic figure, a kinetic gong bash toy, a locking NYC train car that Kong destroys to start multiball, and a custom sculpted biplane that aims its attack straight at the eighth wonder of the world.

Designed for the player who wants every major Premium upgrade without paying the Limited Edition collector premium, and built for operators who need a coin-op ready machine that will stop foot traffic in its tracks.

Stern Pinball: The Industry Leader

Stern Banner Image

Stern Pinball is a leading name in the pinball industry, renowned for its innovative designs and high-quality machines.

Founded by Gary Stern, the company has a long-standing reputation for combining classic pinball gameplay with modern technology.

They are famous for their unique themes and collaborations with iconic franchises, delivering immersive experiences to fans and collectors alike.

Their commitment to craftsmanship and detail ensures that every machine is not just a game, but a work of art, making Stern a beloved brand among pinball enthusiasts worldwide.

The Premium's Core Advantage: King Kong Moves

The single most important difference between the Premium and the Pro is the animatronic Kong figure. On the Premium, the custom-sculpted King Kong reacts to player action through a new animatronic animation system, physically swinging his arms and torso to assert his dominance during play.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Premium Pinball Machine playfield overview showing animatronic Kong figure, temple gong toy, NYC train car lock, and multiple ramps.

On the Pro, Kong is a static custom-sculpted figure. He looks the part, but he does not move. On the Premium, every hit, every lock, and every escalating moment of the game has Kong physically responding to what you are doing. The experience at the machine is categorically different.

This is the feature that pinball buyers notice immediately when they stand at the game. The animatronic system was designed specifically for this title by the same creative team behind JAWS, Godzilla, and Jurassic Park, and it shows in how tightly Kong's movements are tied to the action happening on the playfield.

Kinetic Gong Bash Toy with Temple Housing

The Premium's Gong is a fully kinetic bash toy housed inside a decorated sculpted temple structure. Hitting it reveals a path to Kong's vertical up kicker, with a secret entrance and a wireform return completing the shot.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Premium Pinball Machine playfield detail showing animatronic Kong figure, temple gong toy, NYC train car lock, biplane ramp, and sculpted features.

On the Pro, the Gong is an entrance housed in decorated plastic. On the Premium, the temple housing and kinetic mechanism make the Gong shot feel substantial and rewarding in a way that a flat plastic piece simply cannot replicate.

For operators, this matters because it is the kind of interactive toy that makes a passerby stop and watch. Players who see the Gong bash toy in action will feed more coins to explore it.

NYC Train Car Ball Lock and King Kong Multiball

The Premium adds an elevated New York City train car ball lock that the Pro does not have. Lock pinballs into the train car and an agitated Kong will physically destroy and flip it over to launch King Kong Multiball.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Premium Pinball Machine commercial pinball featuring custom animatronic King Kong figure with swinging arms and torso mechanism close-up detail view

The NYC train station middle ramp on the Premium also gains a diverter that feeds the lock, creating a dedicated path that the Pro's middle ramp does not include. The result is a multiball start sequence tied directly to Kong's animatronic action, which makes it one of the most theatrical multiball triggers in modern pinball.

Multiball starts are the moments that bring a room to a standstill. Having one anchored to a Kong figure that physically reacts, combined with a train car he destroys, elevates that moment well beyond what most machines offer at any price point.

Custom Sculpted Biplane Toy

The Premium features a custom sculpted biplane toy on the helix-shaped Biplane ramp, posed to aim its attack directly at Kong. On the Pro, the biplane is a multilayered decorated plastic piece.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island pinball machine, custom sculpted Biplane toy detail with helix ramp, commercial coin-operated game

The difference is most visible when the Biplane Attack Feature is active. Shooting the Biplane ramp with a three-dimensional sculpted plane overhead rather than a flat decorated plastic changes the visual drama of that shot considerably.

Paired with the helix ramp geometry already shared across the line, the sculpted biplane toy gives the Premium a cohesiveness of physical detail that rewards players who look closely at what is around them on the playfield.

Premium Cabinet Finish and Hardware

The Premium uses a powder-coated steel bottom arch where the Pro uses a plastic molded bottom arch. The Premium also adds powder-coated black wrinkle finish hand guard side armor on the cabinet.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Premium pinball machine apron with instruction cards, start button and powder-coated steel bottom arch

These are not cosmetic details. Powder-coated steel on the bottom arch means the high-contact area where players rest their hands during long sessions is genuinely more durable than the plastic equivalent. In a commercial location, this translates directly to a longer service life without visible wear.

The Premium also ships with its own distinct translite and cabinet artwork. The Premium features the King Kong on Building translite and biplane attack side cabinet art, setting it apart visually from the Pro's Terror Island artwork at a glance.

Four-Flipper Layout with Dedicated Upper Buttons

Every edition of King Kong: Myth of Terror Island runs four flippers. Two standard lower flippers anchor the bottom of the playfield, while a dedicated upper left flipper and upper upper right flipper extend the reach of play into the mid-field in ways a two-flipper layout cannot.

Stern King Kong Premium Playfield Full Overview

The upper flippers each have their own dedicated cabinet buttons rather than firing with the lower pair. This means skilled players can trigger upper shots independently, opening up strategic shot selection that rewards practice and precision.

The stainless steel Cliffs ramp feeds the upper right flipper. The Log Bridge themed pop-up inlane diverter feeds the upper left. Both paths reward players who learn to control the upper flippers, which is a skill that most modern pinball machines simply do not develop.

The Giant Spider Pit Magnet

Entering The Pit on Terror Island puts the ball into the territory of a custom-sculpted giant spider. A pit magnet beneath the playfield grabs, holds, and attacks the ball, simulating the danger of the encounter before releasing it back into play.

Stern King Kong Myth of Terror Island Premium Pinball Machine featuring the custom sculpted Giant Spider and The Pit magnet in bright blue.

The magnet interaction is not a simple drain-or-continue binary. It creates a genuine moment of tension where the player watches the ball being held and must react to where it goes when released. In a crowded bar or arcade, this sequence draws a crowd.

The Spider Pit mode challenges players to shoot The Pit repeatedly to battle various pit creatures, building on that initial magnet encounter into a full gameplay thread.

Game Modes: Six Distinct Play Threads

The ruleset on King Kong: Myth of Terror Island gives players six major gameplay threads to pursue simultaneously, each tied directly to a physical feature on the playfield.

The Climb Feature has players shooting CLIMB arrows to ascend the building and collect awards. King Kong Multiball lights the Kong lock via the Lost Temple drop targets, and locking three balls starts the mode.

The Biplane Attack Feature is started by shooting the Biplane ramp. T-Rex Battle activates when players collect the KING KONG letters. Island Scenes are started by shooting the Gong. The Spider Pit sends players into The Pit to battle creatures in sequence.

The depth here comes from Keith Elwin's design philosophy, which he applied to the same degree on JAWS and Godzilla. Multiple active modes running at once, with physical toys responding to each, is what keeps players returning to machines long after the initial novelty has passed.

Designed and Built by an All-Star Creative Team

King Kong: Myth of Terror Island was designed by Keith Elwin, the game designer behind JAWS, Godzilla, and Jurassic Park. These are three of the most commercially successful and critically respected Stern titles of the past decade, and this machine was built by the same hand.

The original hand-drawn artwork is by Kevin O'Connor, Greg Freres, and Jeremy Packer, known in the pinball world as Zombie Yeti, three of the most recognized illustrators working in the medium today.

The original orchestrated soundtrack is by Jerry Thompson, a Pinball Hall of Fame inductee. Custom speech is provided by Brian "Q" Quinn of Impractical Jokers, alongside Rick Zieff, Peter Mackenzie, and Scott Mosenson.

For buyers who care about provenance, this is a machine where every creative role was filled by a named, accomplished professional. The theme itself is drawn from the original King Kong novel rather than any film adaptation, giving the game an original interpretation that stands entirely on its own.

Stern Insider Connected Platform

Every edition of King Kong: Myth of Terror Island includes Stern's Insider Connected platform, accessed via a QR reader built into the bottom arch of the machine. Players scan in to track progress, earn game-specific achievements, and follow an ongoing Terror Island treasure hunt.

Insider Connected also delivers ongoing code updates from Stern after purchase. New rules, new modes, and refinements to existing gameplay can be pushed to the machine over time, which means the game you own today will be a better game in six months without any hardware changes.

For operators, this means a machine that does not become stale. Fresh content gives regular customers a reason to keep playing a title they already know.

Coin-Op Ready for Commercial Venues

The King Kong Premium ships configurable for both coin operation and free play, making it a direct fit for arcades, barcades, bars, and family entertainment centers. The coin door, cash box, and standard operator controls are all present out of the box.

With four flippers, six named game modes, an animatronic centerpiece, and a multiball sequence tied to Kong physically destroying a train car, this machine has the layered spectacle that keeps players feeding coins. Casual players are drawn in by the visuals. Experienced players stay for the ruleset depth.

The one-year limited warranty from Stern and the SPIKE 2 electronics platform mean operators get a machine that is straightforward to service and supported by the most established manufacturer in the industry.

Speaker Expression Lighting Upgrade Path

The Premium cabinet is fully compatible with Stern's Speaker Expression Lighting System accessory kit, sold separately. This add-on introduces dynamic lighting effects tied to gameplay that the base Premium does not include.

For owners who want to step up the light show after purchase, this is the official upgrade path without needing to move to the Limited Edition. It is worth factoring into the total ownership cost if expression lighting is a priority.

Assembly

Assembling the King Kong: Myth of Terror Island Premium is a straightforward process that typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes for two people.

The machine ships with the playfield, electronics, and backbox already installed and tested at the factory. The backbox is folded down and strapped for transit and needs to be raised and secured with the two backbox bolts found in the cash box behind the coin door.

The four legs are packed in two narrow box tubes inside the carton. The eight leg bolts ship pre-fitted to the cabinet and are removed and reused to mount the legs. There is no separate hardware bag, so do not look for one. The plumb bob for the tilt mechanism is found in the parts bag inside the cash box.

Stern requires at least two people to move and maneuver the machine safely. You will need to supply a 5/8 inch socket wrench, a utility knife, and snips. None of these tools ship with the machine. The full service and operation manual is included in the box and covers every step of the setup process in detail.
